Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) provides many advantages, but it also comes with some disadvantages. Those can be avoided, provided all necessary actions and precautions are taken.
Risk of Clogging
The major drawback in SDI is emitter clogging, which can be a result of several factors:
Root Intrusion: Plant roots may grow into emitters, blocking water flow.
Soil Particles intrusion: Soil can enter into the emitters and clog them.
Algae & Bacteria: Algae and bacteria can form deposits inside the tubing.
The root intrusion can be avoided by the use of dedicated emitters, designed and developed specifically or the use in SDI applications.
