Risk of Emitter Clogging in SDI

Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) provides many advantages, but it also comes with some disadvantages. Those can be avoided, provided all necessary actions and precautions are taken.

Risk of Clogging

The major drawback in SDI is emitter clogging, which can be a result of several factors:

  • Root Intrusion: Plant roots may grow into emitters, blocking water flow.

  • Soil Particles intrusion: Soil can enter into the emitters and clog them.

  • Algae & Bacteria: Algae and bacteria can form deposits inside the tubing.

The root intrusion can be avoided by the use of dedicated emitters, designed and developed specifically or the use in SDI applications.

• With our Cu Emitter Line™, we provide a solid defense against root intrusion in SDI. The copper oxide compound which our emitters contain, act as a barrier to roots and invasive underground rhizomes of the plants.

• The Anti-Siphon (AS) system of our PC emitters is a specially designed mechanism that prevents suction of dirt and impurities into the emitter. The AS feature enables our PC emitters to be installed subsurface, perfectly maintaining their irrigation characteristics and multi-year durability.

• The Copper Oxide Compound that we use, prevents the development of algae, bacteria, and fungi into the emitter. It is recognized as the first antimicrobial metal and is widely used in many applications and industries.
